“Conócete a ti mismo.
virtud. Aborrece el ocio. Ama el trabajo. No seas soberbio, antes humilde. No
Santa Mariña Dozo abre, a partir

Cambados has a historic complex
that was declared of
Cultural Interest and one of the best restored in Galicia.
This heritage is made up of mansions, noble houses, sculptures designed by
artists known and important in the art world, squares and cobbled streets. It
is one of the best preserved historical sites in Galicia. But not only art and
culture lives man, it is also the capital of Albariño. This is where the Rías
Baixas denomination of origin was promoted.
I urge you when you have the
desire and time to visit this place that besides beautiful and quiet oozes
culture wherever you go. Worth. We were lucky because the day we visited,
although it was our headquarters for two days, made us an incredible sun, which
helped to make everything more bright.
I thought there would not be many
things to see but I was wrong, there are many places to visit and lots of
interest, especially if you like art and architecture.
We could start with the Plaza
Fefiñans, which consists of Fefiñáns Manor, the arch bridge, the Torre del
Homenaje watchtower, and the church of San Benito. Formerly it was known by the
market place.
Fefiñáns Manor: Declared Well of
Cultural Interest in 2012 Fefiñáns Manor began its construction in the
sixteenth century by mandate of Juan Sarmiento and Valladares, Lord of Fefiñáns
and counselor of Felipe II, the the work was completed by his nephew Don
Gonzalo de Valladares, I Viscount of Fefiñáns, title granted by Felipe IV, and
the son of this one D. Fernando de Valladares II Viscount of Fefiñáns in the
s.XVII. Later, it was transferred by marriage bonds to the counts of Figueroa.
The pazo, has a clear influence
of the Italian Renaissance architecture, evident mainly in the composition of
its façades. It has an "L" shape with two beautiful circular
balconies. Two large entrance gates, and on them, two great shields of family
lineages, introduced by D. Fernando de Valladares, embellish the façade of the
spectacular building. The north side of the palace is dedicated to D. Fernando
de Valladares and the west side to D. Gonzalo.
You can also see a large
crenellated tower and a baroque bridge arch in the north end of the pazo, which
was once accompanied by three others, complement the architectural ensemble.
Today, two albariño wine cellars
are located in the lower part of the palace, one of which was the first winery
to market albariño wine with brand and label.
Church of San Benito: Old
Romanesque temple, remodeled at the beginning of the fifteenth century and
rebuilt in the 17th century by order of Don Gonzalo de Valladares putting it
under the patronage of San Benito. Just as the pazo was declared of Cultural
Interest in August 2012.
The facade and the towers were
built in 1784, as evidenced by an inscription on the access arch.
Its most outstanding elements are
the two baroque bell towers and its gothic interior.
Arch-Bridge: Unique bridge in the
form of arch that is conserved of the four that existed in the square.
They were used by the nobles of
the pazo to move through the different dependencies of the group, or to access
the private part they owned in the church of San Benito.
Tower of Homage: Torre-mirador of
s.XVI. The inscription in it can be read:
"Know yourself. By the
likeness of God he proceeds as a workmanship of his hand. Flee vice. Look for
virtue. It hates leisure. Love the job. Do not be arrogant, rather humble. Do
not lie because it is the greatest villainy of the vile. Search for friends
better than you, because with this and truth, secrecy and cleanness of soul, we
all well. Give what you can well distributed. Do not forget the benefits or
remember the insults if you want to look like God. And he warns that dying dies
gives life because men with great dangers and jobs are acquired. He loves and
fears God and entrusts to him the events because there is no other fortune
".
Plaza de As Rhodes: This square
was formerly known as Plaza Diaria, since it was a place where you could buy
fresh produce such as fish and vegetables daily.
Nowadays, it is a tapas place
where albariño wine and good portions are present throughout the year.
Pazo de Fajardo or Salgado: Date
of the s. XVII, and is an excellent example of what were and are the noble
houses of Cambados. It emphasizes the crenellated tower of the decade of the
60, as well as different shields of the familiar lineages, like the coat of
arms of the Feijoo, the Sotomayor, and of the Figueroa.
Plaza de Alfredo Brañas: Former
place of the Constitution, was the place where the first building of the town
hall was located, until it was moved in 1873 to the current location. In it we
find centuries-old palms, and in the center is a beautiful stone fountain,
carved by the deceased Cambodian sculptor Narciso Pérez. Today, in this
pedestrian square are located several cafes with terraces very crowded by the
people of the town and its visitors and from where you can see the Fajardo
house.
Ruins of Santa Mariña Dozo:
Located in the foothills of the mountain of A Pastora, in the environs of an
old castro, are the rest of the old parish church of Santa Mariña, patron of
Cambados.
On a Romanesque chapel of the
XIII century, D. Lope Sánchez de Ulloa built the church of Santa Mariña Dozo,
which was restored and enlarged by his daughter María de Ulloa at the end of
the 15th century.
In Gothic style sailor, also
presents Renaissance features. It consists of a single nave divided by four
Romanesque transverse arches, five lateral chapels, sacristy and main chapel.
In its interior it emphasizes the decoration with balls on the arches and
chapels. In one of these arches is represented one of the seven deadly sins,
"laziness". In the chapels stand out the iconographies in relief with
Biblical scenes, such as the visitation, Christ and the apostles, the expulsion
of the paradise or the capital sins.
It was detached and abandoned for
political and religious reasons in the nineteenth century, moving the parish
church to the church of the former convent of San Francisco more centrally.
Finally it was used as a parish cemetery.
Their remains were declared National
Monument in 1943 and nowadays house "... the most melancholy cemetery of
the world" in the words of the writer Álvaro Cunqueiro, great admirer of
the cambadesa town.
Since December 2013 and after the
70th anniversary as a National Monument, the City Council of Cambados has
succeeded in including the Ruins of Santa Mariña Dozo in the prestigious
Association of European Cemeteries of Europe (ASCE), becoming the first
cemetery in the province of Pontevedra to belong to this select group, and the
fourth of our Autonomous Community, after the Cemetery of San Amaro of A
Coruña, the English Cemetery of Camariñas and the Cemetery of Lugo.
Santa Mariña Dozo now opens a new
way of promoting and disseminating our heritage through this network of 22
countries and 179 European cemeteries as significant as the Catacombs of Rome,
the Père - Lachaise de Paris or the Zentralfriedhof Vienna.
Tower of San Sadurniño: The
discovery of the tomb of the Apostle Santiago in the early s. IX and the
subsequent uprising of the cathedral, caused that these watch towers arose to
defend the estuary of Arousa and Compostela from the attacks of Normans and
Vikings. Built in the formerly known island of A Figueira, in time of the
compostela bishop Sisnando I, in the High Middle Ages and later repaired by the
archbishop Gelmírez.
By means of bonfires was warned
of the arrival of the pirates to the estuary. The Tower of A Launched sent the
notice to the Tower of San Sadurniño that sent the signal to the Tower of
Cálogo in Vilanova de Arousa that in turn made it arrive at the Towers of the
West in Catoira, putting in state of alert and defense to the whole region and
Santiago de Compostela.
This tower represents the remains
of what used to be a fortress, which would be destroyed by the rebellious
Irmandiños, and again rebuilt by Gomez de Sotomayor until his abandonment. Next
to it there was a chapel, of which there are no vestiges with the images of San
Tomé, that gave name to the town and San Sadurniño that gave name to him to the
tower, conserved in the chapel of the Valvanera.
This defense against the attacks
of the viking and sarraceños towns was worth to him to Cambados to be named
"Very Leal Villa" by King Fernando II in the s.XII, beginning then a
period of splendor that is reflected in the multitude of pazos that exist in
the town. Source: cambados.es, minube.es.
